Ilha Grande was once inhabited by Tamoios and Tupinambas indians. The natives opened the trails which are used to this day.
The island was discovered in 1502 and was initially a hiding place for pirates and illegal slave trade. Later it was transformed into sugar and coffee plantation fields, but at the end of the XIX century these plantations were abandoned and the forest took over, once again.
During the 1970's Ilha Grande was turned into a State Park and a Biologic Reserve was instituted on the South Beach(Praia do Sul).
Automobiles and campings are forbidden to preserve nature.
There are no banks or ATM machines on the island, all transactions are completed in cash for this reason. No credit cards are accepted.
